61. Bordone, Benedetto. Zanzibar Maidegascar; (verso
seilam (Ceylon), from his Isolario (Venice, 1528). This single leaf from the Isolario contains
three maps plus text. The entire page
measures 11 ¾ x 8 inches. On one side is
a map of Zanzibar and Maidegascar (5 ¾ x3 ½ inches) and a map of Southeast
Asian islands (5 ¾ x 3 ¼ inches)
(including an island of men and an island of women); verso is a map
of Seilam (5 ¼ x 3 ¼ inches) (Ceylon) though Thomas Suarez in his Early
Mapping of Southeast Asia believes this map is actually Sumatra. The Bordone
atlas was revolutionary in that it was the first atlas covering the entire
world not based on classical (Ptolemic) geography and the first atlas to contain
maps of the new world. $325
