Atlas Of Pilot Charts: Indian Ocean (Washington, D.C., Defense Mapping Agency, 1995). Twelve maps, one for each month, plotting pressure, temperature, winds, gales, cyclones, visibility, currents, wave heights, etc. throughout the entire IO region. Each map is 26 x 19 inches, color. SOLD

Bellin, J. N. Carte de L’Ocean oriental ou Mer des Indes pour Servir a l’Histoire Generale des Voyages (1747). A classic map of the Indian Ocean showing the entire littoral from the Cap de Bonne Esperance to Nouvelle Hollande. Toussaint/Adolphe, F-1033. b/w, 19 x 14 inches. $500

Bertius, Pertus. Abissinorum Imperium, from his Tabularum geographicarum contratarum (Minature World Atlas) (Amsterdam,1610). An elegant small map of Africa centered on Abyssinia but including Arabia, the Red Sea,   Lamu, Melinde, Pemba, Zanzibar, Cosmoledo, and two large lakes in the heart on the continent.  5  1/4 x 3 3/4 inches, later outline color, with image on rear. Carte des Isles et Bancs nommes Adu et Candu, Chagas, &ca  (Paris, c. 1785).  Across the top of the sea chart is written, “Carter des Decouvertes faites N. E. de L’Isle de France dont le Vicomte Grenier….This is a sea chart of the Chagos with the plotting of voyages in the area by Grenier (1769),  Pitts (1763),  Stringer (1712), le Grifin (1749), l’Aigle (1772), le Grantam (1728), de Surville (1756), etc.  24 x 12 inches, light foxing, ragged right edge not affecting chart.  $450

Chart Showing the Track of the Flagship of the U.S. Japan Expedition to the East of the Cape of Good Hope 1853-1854, from Commodore Matthew Perry, Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron…(Washington, D.C., 1856). 16 x 10 ½ inches, pale outline color.   SOLD

A Correct Chart of the Indian Ocean Engraved for Malham’s Naval Gazetter (Boston, Spotswood and Nancrede, 1796).  9 x 7 1/2, later hand color. A map of the northern Indian Ocean centered on India and including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.   $75

D’Apres de Mannevillette, J. B. N. Carte des Isles et Dangers Situes au Nord-Est de l’Isle Madagascar from Le Neptune Oriental (Paris, 1775). This is basically a map of the Chagos Archipelago. There is a small compass rose. 19 ½ x 13 inches. $350

Indes, from J. T. Herissant, Atlas Moderne (Paris, 1762).  Phillips 629 attributes the map to Robert Janvier. The map is centered on the Indian Ocean south of Ceylon and includes Southern India, Ceylon, the Maldives, the Chagos Archipelago, Northwestern Sumatra. Rhumb lines and monsoon wind directions and dates highlighted. 16 x 11 ½ inches, outline color. $250

The map covers Cape Town to Perth (east-west); Zanzibar-Chagos-Java (north); and Kerguelen, McDonald, Heard, Crozet, Prince Edward Islands (south).  SOLD

Mare Indicum (ca. 1692). A spare outline map of the entire Indian Ocean region from Southern Africa to Hollandia Nova. Includes a compass rose and three sailing ships. The map is said to come from a 1692 Bible.  11 1/4 x 7 inches, b/w.    SOLD

Outline Map to Illustrate a Plan for Steam Navigation between Europe and India via Egypt, by Captain C. F. Head. (London, n.d., but mid-19th century, pre-Suez Canal). Centered on Arabia but stretching from Malta to Bombay with two large insets: Plan of the Temple of Carnac, and Plan of the Temple of Luxor. Small water stain on upper right corner not affecting image. Compass rose, color, 22 x 14 inches.   SOLD

Tallis, John. Islands in the Indian Ocean, from Tallis, The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World (London, 1851). Drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin; five illustrations/vignettes drawn and engraved by H. Winkles. There is a detailed inset map of Mauritius as well as five vignettes: Native Village, Madgascar; Point de Galle, Ceylon; Port Louis, Mauritius; North Beach, Prince of Wales Island; and Fall of the River Roche, Isle of Bourbon. The Tallis atlas is regarded as one of the great decorative atlases of the nineteenth century. 14 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches, outline color. $175

Walker, J. & C. Islands in the Indian Ocean, from World Atlas (London, Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, 1844). This map comprises eleven maps on a single sheet: Amirantes, Seychelle Archipelago, Madagascar, Socotra, Rodrigue, Chagos Group, Keeling Isles, Lakadive and Maldive Islands, Nicobar and Andaman Isles, Mauritius and Bourbon, and Kerguelen or Desolation Island. 15 1/2 x 12 inches, with the Society’s distinctive outline color. $100
