Merian, Matthaus. Goa. A wonderful birds-eye town plan of Goa by the noted Swiss engraver (Frankfurt, 1628). It also appeared in Gottfried’s Archontologia (1649). There is a cartouche identifying 43 buildings and the plan includes the harbor full of ships, a royal seal, a small compass rose, and even two elephants working on the harbor. 14 x 11 inches. $375

The views are: Lorenzo Marquez Custom House: View from the Landing-Jetty of the Port; Lorenzo Marquez: View from the Berea, Powder Magazine in the Foreground; and Railway Bridge over the Sluice of the Swamp Drainage at Lorenzo Marquez. Designatio Horrendi Cvivs-Dam Latrocinii, in Goa Civitate Patrati. A very early view from Goa, partly a pleasant pastoral scene, partly an apparent scene of adultery with one person being stabbed and others showing great distress.
